busy is as busy does.
It’s been a busy few weeks. It should probably come as no surprise to anyone who has known me for any length of time that I would start a new year (and a new decade of my life) absolutely slammed with a jam-packed calendar, work life and list of things to do that stretches from my head to my toes.
Work is crazy. Life is crazy. I spend more time than I would care to think about sitting in my office, staring at the same pile of papers over and over, willing them to edit themselves (and oh, while they’re at it, write the french translations, already). But for all of the chaos, I really do love going in there every day, and that is really 3/4 of the battle with work than anyone faces, isn’t it? Also, I get unreasonably excited about concerts, which helps.
But despite loving it, the busy-busy-busy mode of it all makes me a little crazy. Like that time that I woke up, thought I was terribly late for work, sent an email saying so, and that I would be in soon, and only THEN realized that it was Sunday, not Monday. Right. Oh! And that was this morning. Four more weeks until the insanity ends and I board a sailboat bound for nowhere in the middle of the ocean. Let me tell you, I am looking forward to that day (and not just because I almost walked to work on a Sunday morning thinking I was going to be very late for my first meeting)!
Have any embarrassing work stories to share? I could use some company here, in “I was so eager to go to work I didn’t even need my whole weekend”-land!

well, if it makes you feel any better.. I once woke up in a panic (had an already stressful job with an intense boss, to say the least), thinking I missed my alarm.. got up, got in the shower, got ready.. I don’t remember it all, but it turned out to be 3 am in the morning andI just panicked.. not sure, what I saw on my alarm and everything.. couldn’t even fall asleep anymore after that.. I am sure, this happened to a lot of people before, but ..
oh.. and once, I got up before 6am, because we had to go to fernie on a site visit (4 site visits, to be precise.. )..ignoring the feeling thatI did not feel well. not just overtired, but somewhat very off.. it got worse on the drive down there, but I still survived it.. well, the meeting on a cold construction site started and I almost faded.. went into the car to sit down, slept for a bit, only to wake up with theknowledge thatI am really sick now and better have to go, run, somewhere.. well, the only placeI could find was behind the building, vegetable garden, where I threw up in the raspberry bushes. with all the construction workers being pretty close by.. after that, I was better, but that was pretty much one wasted day.. 8 hours in the car for that!
The Friday of the first week I tranferred to the Ottawa office I was sent a joke by a former workmate in Halifax. It was cute and funny so I forwarded it to a group of my new workmates. When I got home I saw my former workmate had cc’d the joke to my home email as well. When I opened it, what I hadn’t noticed before was that there was another “joke” further down the page that featured a big hairy penis! I freaked out. I couldn’t imagine what my new workmates were thinking about this new chick who sends out emails at work like this. I composed a very contrite email in apology explaining the mistake and sent it out first thing Monday. They hadn’t given the first email a second thought they said, but they got a good laugh out of my embarassed apology.
