owls!

I have to admit (in case you haven’t figured it out yet), that I am a bit of a design junkie. I especially like screen printed goodies from the likes of seripop and others.

I was instantly taken with Eleanor Grosch when I first started seeing her dreamy screenprinted works (like this toothy walrus death cab poster and this pretty iron and wine horsey poster and well…gosh…all of the rest of them too) kicking around band tours and her beautiful tshirts (I heart this octopus and his umbrella shirt) showing up on the chests of people I know and well – I could go on and on about all the stuff she does that I love.

So when I saw these limited edition Eleanor Grosch keds I *had* to have them. And they’re not (or at least hardly) available here in Canada. So I had to wait for the US mail (and first find a place that would actually ship to the US’s freakish northern neighbours). But I did! And they get here today! And they are awesome.

So awesome, in fact, that I am almost too awed by them to actually put them on. I think I should have ordered two pairs.

twenty-three sparklers

If there’s one thing you’ll ever learn about my baby sister, it’s that she’s good at coveting. She *wants* things, and she wants them, well, pretty much now. And if she doesn’t get them now, she’s going to talk about them until she does get them, or at least call “dibs!” before anyone else has the chance to.

In my living room, I have a coffee table that was passed down from my parents. It’s been around our family since I was very tiny – perhaps even before I was born, so it’s something that ryn and I both grew up with. For a hefty portion of our lives it sat in our family room – we spent a lot of quality time with that table. And our TV. But who didn’t in the 80s?

Carved into the corner of the table are four letters: E. R. I. N. You can see them in the photo above. They must have been carved when she was pretty young – the lettering is off and wavy, almost like what you would expect from someone who was only. At one point in her life Ryn *wanted* this table.

Though I often think I would like a nicer table, something newer and more modern, there’s a sentimental part of me that forces me to hang on to this, if only because ryn called dibs on it a decade or two ago. Which means, you know, that she’s probably still coveting the thing.

Sometimes spite and sisterly love are one and the same.

Happy birthday, coveter. You still can’t have the table. :P

flat files and studio space

Jul 10 2006 Published by under crafty, design, goings on

good news! we found a super apartment (yes, I am moving *again*, and *no* I don’t want to talk about how much time I have been spending with cardboard boxes) and it comes (…drum roll please…) with enough room for me to have a studio again! whee! (and by studio I mean not a studio/living room/boyfriend’s office/dining room/kitten playground but an actual room with an actual door that belongs to me that I can fill with fabric and other stuff)

my brain is reeling – full of ideas for things I’m going to do with my newfound space, but mostly, my poor little head is chugging along on one problem….this one:

I am in search of flat files that look something like these ones, and these ones, and these ones, and especially these ones (if I could I would take that whole studio home with me). Pretty and functional and made of wood is the name of the game. No tacky (and noisy!) steel, but I might be persuades if it’s black and reallllly pretty. I’m planning to use these for the storage of my rather unweildy collection of notions, buttons, thread, quilting rulers, zippers, pins, pattern pieces and other miscellaneous sewing junk that is just impossible to store in containers (only because my studio would be full.of.them). I’d also like to be able to use the top as a bit of a cutting surface covered with healing mats.

Does anyone know where to get new and/or used flat files around town (or on the internet for a decent price with shipping to Canada)?
